Thea Energy builds stellarator fusion reactors using arrays of planar superconducting magnets and software controls to generate steady-state fusion neutrons and power. It is developing the Eos neutron source stellarator system and the Helios fusion power plant. The planar coil architecture, licensed from PPPL, uses mass-manufacturable magnets and high-temperature superconductors, optimized via computation to achieve stable plasma confinement without disruptions. Co-founded in 2022 by Brian Berzin (CEO, ex-VP Strategy at General Fusion) and Dr. David Gates (CTO, PPPL physicist who developed the planar stellarator technology). The company raised $20 million in Series A financing in February 2024, led by Prelude Ventures with participation from 11.2 Capital, Anglo American, Hitachi Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Mercator Partners, Orion Industrial Ventures, and Starlight Ventures. Headquarters are located in Kearny, New Jersey, with an office in Princeton, New Jersey.
