Merge Labs develops brain-computer interfaces that connect neurons using molecules instead of electrodes and transmit information via ultrasound, avoiding brain tissue implants, while integrating AI to interpret neural signals at high bandwidth. The research lab targets applications in medical rehabilitation for paralysis patients, productivity tools, education, gaming, and enterprise workflows. It was founded in 2025 by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, Sandro Herbig, Mikhail Shapiro, Tyson Aflalo, and Sumner Norman. Merge Labs raised $252 million in a seed round with participation from OpenAI, Bain Capital Ventures, and Gabe Newell, achieving a last known valuation of $850 million as of January 2026.
