Derren Burrell is the Founder and Managing Partner of Veteran Ventures Capital, a veteran-owned growth equity venture capital firm investing in dual-use national security and defense technology companies led by veterans. At Veteran Ventures, he oversees firm strategy, company operations, and fund management, including Veteran Fund I and subsequent funds that back early-stage and growth businesses across sectors such as government technology, space, security, logistics, and cybersecurity. His private-sector experience includes serving as Chief Operating Officer at TAG Resources, LLC, a retirement services company with more than $1.5 billion in assets under management, following a 21-year career as a United States Air Force officer in the financial management field, where his final role was Resource Director at the White House Communications Agency.
Burrell has led the launch and growth of Veteran Ventures’ funds, including a first fund of approximately $20 million and a second fund targeted in the tens of millions, and has been credited with generating a 5x return over three years at TAG Resources culminating in an acquisition. He is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and recipient of the Presidential Service Badge. His academic credentials include a master’s degree in cost analysis from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology, along with additional master’s degrees in human resources and global security/national policy. He is a Certified Defense Financial Manager, an Accredited Investment Fiduciary, and Level 3 certified in the Secretary of Defense Financial Management Program, and has been recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year at the U.S. Forces in Business Awards.
