Waymo develops the Waymo Driver, a self-driving system used in its Waymo One ride-hailing service and in autonomous vehicles for passengers in select U.S. markets. Its public service lets riders hail driverless rides through the Waymo app, and the company says its stack combines lidar, cameras, radar, and onboard AI compute to perceive the road, predict behavior, and plan maneuvers in real time. Waymo traces back to Google’s self-driving car project, and the company is led by CEO Tekedra Mawakana, with co-CEOs Dmitri Dolgov and Tekedra Mawakana listed in company materials and founders associated with the original Google X project including Sebastian Thrun and Anthony Levandowski. Alphabet has continued to fund Waymo over time, including a $2.5 billion round led by Alphabet in 2020, with additional strategic investment rounds following thereafter. Waymo’s headquarters is in Mountain View, California, and the company also operates in other U.S. offices and testing locations.
