Subcritical Systems Inc. is an Austin, Texas-based startup developing accelerator-driven subcritical nuclear energy systems based on the Energy Amplifier concept originally proposed by Carlo Rubbia. The company combines high-power particle accelerators with deeply subcritical nuclear assemblies to generate electrical power in an inherently safe manner that remains below criticality under all conditions. Founded in early 2025 and backed by Future Ventures, it is advancing technical development and pursuing licensing of its systems under existing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations.
