Softmax builds cogames, an open-source package and public benchmark for measuring social intelligence in multi-agent systems through massively multiplayer games. The initial cogame, Cogs vs Clips, features teams competing to control junctions and expand territory via specialized roles including miner to collect resources, aligner, scrambler, scout, and gear stations for equipping roles. It conducts multi-agent reinforcement learning simulations in open-ended game-like worlds focused on social learning, enabling agents to share goals, develop roles, and form collectively intelligent systems. Co-founded in 2025 by Emmett Shear (CEO, former Twitch CEO and OpenAI interim CEO, YC partner) and David Bloomin (former large-scale infrastructure engineer at Google, Facebook, and Asana; cofounder of Plurality Institute). Raised undisclosed funding in 2025 led by or including Andreessen Horowitz, Lionheart Ventures, and Plural. Headquartered in San Francisco, California.
