Shareholder of Chanzi Ltd. Tanzania
Startup · FOUNDED 2018

Chanzi Ltd, initiated in 2018 and established commercially in 2019, converts organic food waste into animal feed protein and organic fertilizer using black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). The company purchases unwanted food waste from smallholder farmers, commercial farms, urban markets, and businesses, then sells dried whole larvae, ground larvae, and organic fertilizer to livestock, poultry, and fish farmers, agrodealers, and feed mills across Tanzania and Kenya. Chanzi's larvae contain approximately 50% crude protein and 20% fat with an amino acid profile similar to fishmeal. Sune Mushendwa serves as Founder and COO. The company has raised USD 3.052 million to date, beginning with USD 210,000 in founder and shareholder loans during bootstrapping, followed by USD 2.427 million during the seed stage from convertibles, equity, grants, accelerators, and prizes; Chanzi is currently seeking USD 15 million for expansion. Operations are based in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Nairobi (opened December 2023), with the Arusha facility processing 40 metric tons of waste daily and producing 10 metric tons of insect protein.
