The California Institute for Machine Consciousness carries out a research program on consciousness adopting a computationalist functionalist stance, proposing the Machine Consciousness Hypothesis that general computational machines with sufficient resources can implement consciousness through self-organized second-order perception that increases global coherence. Research directions include foundational theory, self-organization and multi-agent systems such as Neural Cellular Automata, and cognitive architectures like Request Confirmation Networks. Joscha Bach serves as Vision and Direction lead and Board Director, Hikari Sorensen handles research in computational philosophy, Franz Hildebrandt-Harangozó conducts research in philosophy, Lou de Kerhuelvez manages programs as Board Director, and Jim Rutt acts as Board Chairman Emeritus. The institute launched on May 30th and published its foundational whitepaper in 2026.
