The Bundestag is the federal parliament of Germany and the lower house of its bicameral legislature. Directly elected by the German people under the Basic Law, it meets in the Reichstag building in Berlin, elects the Chancellor, and performs legislative and oversight functions. It first convened on 7 September 1949.
