BioMADE functions as a Manufacturing Innovation Institute that funds technology and innovation research projects, education and workforce development initiatives, and pilot plant infrastructure to bridge benchtop research to commercial-scale bioindustrial manufacturing. It serves over 325 members spanning industry, academia, non-profits, and U.S. government entities across 40 states in the domestic bioindustrial manufacturing sector. BioMADE facilitates production of biobased goods including chemicals, materials, textiles, fuels, bioplastics, detergents, paints, critical minerals, natural rubber from dandelions, aviation fuels, laser protection eyewear, and carbon fiber using biological processes. The institute was awarded $87.5 million from the U.S. Department of Defense under Air Force sponsorship. BioMADE maintains headquarters in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, with an additional site in Emeryville, California.
