BioHalo is a biotechnology company headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, that develops microbial biohalogenation technology to produce sustainable alternatives to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The company engineers microbes to insert single fluorine atoms into organic molecules with precision, creating biodegradable fluoropolymers and fluoromonomers for industrial applications including films, coatings, and high-performance materials under product names F-PHB and NyFon. Dr. Nicolas Krink serves as CEO and co-founder, alongside co-founder Prof. Pablo Ivan Nikel, Group Leader at the Technical University of Denmark; the company is a spinout from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain). BioHalo has raised approximately 12 million DKK (€1.6 million) in total funding, including 8 million DKK from BioInnovation Institute and 4 million DKK in matched grants, with an initial funding round of 1.9 million USD supported by ValleyDAO. The technology has reached TRL5 stage, with the company currently validating and commercializing products for near-commercial deployment with industrial partners.
