About

Edward S. "Ed" Boyden is an American neuroscientist and bioengineer renowned for pioneering optogenetics—a technique using light to control neurons—and expansion microscopy, which physically enlarges biological samples for nanoscale imaging with ordinary microscopes. He serves as the Y. Eva Tan Professor in Neurotechnology at MIT, a professor in the departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Media Arts and Sciences, and Biological Engineering, an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and McGovern Institute, and leader of the Synthetic Neurobiology Group. Boyden co-directs the MIT Center for Neurobiological Engineering and K. Lisa Yang Center for Bionics, focusing on tools for brain mapping, noninvasive stimulation, and therapeutic interventions for neurological disorders. A child prodigy who earned multiple MIT degrees by age 19 and a PhD from Stanford, he has received major awards including the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and Brain Prize, with his innovations accelerating neuroscience and inspiring clinical applications.
