About

Viren Jain, Ph.D. is an American neuroscientist and machine learning researcher best known as the leader of the Connectomics team at Google Research, where he drives high-throughput, synaptic-resolution mapping of brain circuits using advanced AI and volume electron microscopy. Previously a group leader at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus (2011–2013), Jain has pioneered tools like Neuroglancer for multidimensional data visualization and TensorStore for petascale data management, while collaborating on landmark reconstructions—including the largest synapse-level maps of fly, mouse, and human brain tissue. A University of Pennsylvania alumnus with degrees in Computer Science and Cognitive Science, followed by a PhD in Computation from MIT, his work has garnered over 8,000 citations and aims to unlock fundamental insights into neural computation and brain function.
