Macro Oceans develops a multi-product, zero-waste bioprocessing system that converts kelp into bioactive compounds, biopolymers, and materials such as MacroForm Alginates for food texture solutions, Big Kelp Hydration and Big Kelp Flex for beauty ingredients, and low-carbon feedstocks for bioplastics. It supplies these to customers including Socius Ingredients, Sway for sustainable yarns and plastics, and cosmetic brands. The single-step microbial extraction process uses whole kelp plants to produce drop-in ingredients for food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and animal protein markets. Founded in 2020 by Matthew Perkins, who serves as CEO, the leadership includes founding engineer Mohammad Tajparast and James Dillard on the founding team for product and sales. The company raised a $7.5 million seed round in 2024, led by Refactor Capital, with a prior $5 million round backed by Refactor Capital, Lowercarbon Capital, and McKinley Capital. In 2023, it completed a pilot facility in West Sacramento, California, and acquired Everything Seaweed's processing technologies. Its operations are based in California.
