Living Carbon
Startup · HQ Hayward, CA · FOUNDED 2019

Living Carbon develops genetically engineered, photosynthesis-enhanced poplar trees that grow 30-54% faster, sequester more CO2, and resist drought and rot, using gene-editing to improve photorespiration and metal assimilation for growth on degraded land like abandoned mines and exhausted farmland. The company offers reforestation services, certified carbon credits, and biomass feedstocks, partnering with landowners for revenue-sharing projects and corporations such as Octopus Energy Generation, Google, McKinsey, and Meta for carbon removal contracts, including a $500 million deal announced April 30, 2026, to remove up to 50 million tons of CO2 over 40 years and a prior $13 million investment from Octopus. It has raised over $36 million total, with investors including Lowercarbon Capital, Temasek, Toyota Ventures, Day One Ventures, and Felicis Ventures. Maddie Hall co-founded the company in 2019 and serves as CEO. Headquartered in Hayward, California, Living Carbon has planted hundreds of thousands of trees across four U.S. states and conducts multi-site field trials of its GMO trees.
