The Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society is a research institute located in Berlin, Germany, founded in 1911 as the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry and renamed in 1953 following its incorporation into the Max Planck Society. The institute conducts fundamental research in physical chemistry, surface chemistry, catalysis, and molecular physics, with particular focus on understanding chemical transformations at surfaces and interfaces; research areas include heterogeneous catalysts for chemical energy conversion, electrochemical production of hydrogen, and gas-phase molecular dynamics. The institute operates multiple research departments and groups organized around scientific directors, including work in controlled molecules, interface science, molecular physics, and theoretical chemistry. The institute is located in the Dahlem academic district of Berlin and operates as part of the Max Planck Society, a network of independent research institutes in Germany.
