Formo develops animal-free dairy products including cheeses such as Frischhain cream cheese, Camembritz brie-style, Frankoforte blue cheese, and Hellasdorf feta, plus planned egg substitutes like What Came Third. It sells these to retailers including REWE, BILLA, and Metro stores in Germany and Austria. The company uses microfermentation with koji (Aspergillus oryzae) for proteins and precision fermentation to produce bio-identical milk proteins like casein. Formo was founded in 2019 by Raffael Wohlgensinger and Britta Winterberg, with Christian Poppe as head of global public affairs and sustainability. It raised $61 million in a Series B round in September 2024 led by EQT Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, and Elevat3 Capital, bringing total funding to about $135 million. The company is headquartered in Berlin, Germany.
